In an effort to cement my mayorship of Grand Sichuan on Canal St., I’ve gone there three times this week, and I will go there anytime any one of my friends wants to go for dinner there. Just lemme know when, and on which day, and I am so there.
It’s definitely my favorite of the Grand Sichuan (which can be inconsistent — I think the one in Chelsea is probably the worst I’ve been to… no, wait, actually, the one on 7th ave between Leroy and Carmine is a total snooze. Next worst is Chelsea. Lexington is decent and St. Marks is excellent).
But the Canal Street one — perhaps due to its presence in Chinatown, which would force any restaurant to seriously step up its game — is really top notch. The pork tripe with shredded hot peppers is the best tripe in town, for my money. And this fish dish above — the boringly named fish in sichuan sauce — is heavenly. There’s some seriously narcotic depth to the flavor and I already want it again.
