What should be even more troubling to those who call themselves progressives but oppose the current wars: Obama’s motivations for pursuing them are rooted in the central tenet of progressivism, enunciated by his idols, that the American national government is responsible for the reform and uplift of those “we” deem to be living below “our” standards, and that “they” must be protected from their oppressors. Obama’s role models followed the logic of that moral calling to the ends of the earth.

Sure, liberals will note that Bush started the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which is obviously true. But it’s also true, that while running, Bush appealed to his base with an anti-war message (a humble foreign policy; no “nation-building” conficts) that was designed as an antidote to Clinton’s imperialism.

It was only once he got to Washington, and fell under the sway of Cheney and the neocons (who were imported from the left) that the affable Texan became bloodthirsty.

I never said he was a good guy, but the latter part about him being spineless is correct.

Either way, I LOVE that there’s identifiable Weisenthalian logic. One day it will be collected into a book.
