Where does a lot of that earmark money end up anyway? […] You’ve heard about some of these pet projects they really don’t make a whole lot of sense and sometimes these dollars go to projects that have little or nothing to do with the public good. Things like fruit fly research in Paris, France. I kid you not.

Sarah Palin showing the true depths of her ignorance and anti-intellectual attitude. Apparently, the research in question was to deal with an olive fruit fly problem that threatened the olive industry in California. The research was in France because that’s where the leading researchers on the problem are. On a related note, other research using fruit fly models has led to an increased knowledge about brain and nervous system function, including a deeper understanding of autism and other mental disabilities. Actually, she raises an extraordinarily interesting point.  So what if the leading researchers are in France?  Why are American tax dollars funding a research project there?

It seems to me that if you accept the premise that certain research is worth funding with tax dollar — I don’t, necessarily — then it doesn’t make much difference where it’s being conducted.
