So the Corner has used its bytes to explore (in one memorable case) whether Obama is a citizen, and the Republican Party and McCain campaign have used their airtime and their ability to drive stories to peddle sometimes exaggerated and unconfirmed tales of Obama’s relationships. The press has then spent time debunking those exaggerations, and been criticized for bias. I don’t want to speculate on what’s revealed by the choice to attack Obama as a crypto-radical rather than to argue with him as a liberal Democrat. But it was a central choice in the way this campaign has developed, and if Obama is elected, it will represent a continuing choice for conservatives: Continue to look for the Rosetta Stone in his past, or battle him on the substance of what he does.
