Olerud, Alfonzo, Ordonez, Ventura.  The Best.

Embarrassingly, I used to have this SI cover thumbtacked on my bedroom wall.
It was part of a Wall of Awkward Adolescent Tomboyness that also included a giant NYT Sports cover story titled (and sadly, I remember this from memory) “Over the Rainbow: Starks Seals Victory at Buzzer”.
(Which: I just Googled, and honestly? I think I wrote sports recaps in grade school that were less fragmented than this:
It was the kind of shot that kids dream about when they are growing up. Your team is down by 2 points. The ball is in your hands for a 3-pointer. The buzzer sounds. And the ball swishes through the net for victory. That was exactly how it happened for John Starks last night. His thrilling game-winning 3-point jumper at the buzzer lifted New York to an emotional 95-94 victory over the Phoenix Suns at Madison Square Garden. It was fitting that Starks made the game-winner because he kept the Knicks alive late, scoring 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, another big performance in a terrific season for Starks.
Yeah, I went back to the Starks well. Eat your heart out, Waksays!)

Why did I love John Olerud as a kid? Oh, that’s right, cause he always had a batter helmet on. AWESOME.
