doesn’t mankiw make a similar point asking people to explain the difference between the government: a) sending a guy an unemployment check, b) hire him to sit on his couch and watch tv, c) hire him to sit on his couch and watch something he doesn’t like. In every case, nothing productive is getting done. in b) & c), it gets counted towards GDP. in c) nothing is getting done, it gets counted towards GDP, AND the “worker” is unhappy. which is “better”? and is this good for the economy?
